For the document I chose, I chose a article from NAMM about the importance of music education and how it can benefit both the students but also the school district as a whole. By implementing music education students are able to gain a sense of community early and branch out within said community. This then results in the students doing better both socially and academically. Having a space where students can try new things and hone skills over a long time teaches them both creativity as well as drive and dedication that gets later passed on to them as they continue to pursue music or even quit and go on to pursue something else. Either way it results in a more driven indavidual that has already learned what it takes to be passionate about something and to continue to push and work even when it gets hard. This relates to my discourse community because I have chosen to cover the music program here at SDSU and I believe that even at a higher college level these core values and beliefs continue to transfer over and affect the students and teachers within the school.
